Dr. Bush and Dr. Vara first met in the 1980s when Dr. Vara worked as a technician at Dr. Bush’s clinic, although Dr. Vara had to head back to College Station to finish school his studies he and Dr. Bush would remain in contact until Dr. Vara returned to San Antonio. Then in the early 1990’s Dr. Bush started holding an annual “Low Cost Vaccination Clinic” at Rudy’s feed store. Dr. Bush told Dr. Vara about his Low Cost Vaccination Clinic and upon further research they identified a need for such events in the San Antonio area. It became apparent that the cost and ease of entry in the veterinary industry was hindering a large population of dogs and cats from preventative healthcare. Therefore, in 1994 they partnered to form Vanguard Veterinary Associates to provide convenient quality healthcare at affordable prices to the city of San Antonio. In its infancy, Vanguard consisted of Dr. Bush, Dr. Vara, and a handful of field staff traveling around San Antonio in “Old Blue” operating Low Cost Vaccination Clinics at local feed stores.
Over the last twenty-five years Vanguard has grown from a few employees in San Antonio to over 200 employees serving the following cities and their surrounding areas; Austin, Bryan, College Station, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and the Valley. Additionally, we have two Brick & Mortar clinics in San Antonio and one in Cypress, Texas with plans to add additional clinics throughout the state in the next 10 years. Though the company has come a long way from our humble beginnings, we still pride ourselves on providing convenient quality healthcare at affordable prices.
